THE opening of the Illos exhibition was one of Sydney's hottest events this week, for more reasons than one. The Newcontemporaries Gallery in the attic of the Queen Victoria Building became sweltering when the event drew an unexpectedly massive crowd; a turnout attributed by some to the popular guest artist employed to open the event Mr Squiggle delighted a number of children (and quite a few adults) when he did the honours at the exhibition, a celebration of contemporary illustration featuring works by Reg Mombassa , Andrew Weldon and Lawrence Finn . The show is a rare chance to witness more detailed works by artists whose illustrations often grace the pages of our daily newspapers. The range of media is also surprising, with sculptures, collages and oil paintings showing alongside satirical cartoons and linocuts. Illos can be seen at Level 3 South in the QVB until May 9.
