WHO Karen Dalton

WHAT In My Own Time (Light In The Attic/Creative Vibes)

Country music might be "white man's blues" but how to categorise a Cherokee woman with the soul of Karen Dalton? Here at last is her second and final album of '71, long a prized rarity among singer-songwriter cognoscenti (Lenny Kaye, Bob Dylan, Fred Neil, Nick Cave and Devendra Banhart pay homage in the notes). In My Own Time is from a time suspended, where banjo and fiddle meet Billie Holiday, Nina Simone dosses with George Jones and thin Appalachian air mingles with heady Greenwich Village smoke. Dalton's eccentrically phrased, achingly soulful versions of Something On Your Mind, Katie Cruel and Are You Leaving for the Country are master classes in the art of interpretation. -- MICHAEL DWYER
